The definition of adventure takes on different forms depending on who you talk to.
My family and I have recently embarked on quite an adventure. Some would call it differently, but the incredible thing about life is that we each get to choose our lens.
I choose to see it as an utterly breath-taking, sometimes nerve-racking, occasionally crazy but mostly marvelous adventure.
Up until just over a month ago, I had been a city girl most of my life. My mother and father met in a small “plattelandse dorpie” in the Eastern Cape and my roots are firmly planted in South Africa’s Klein Karoo, but I enjoyed the comforts of city life and had no particular reason to learn how to ride a horse, or drive a 4×4 in thick dune sand, or know how to count sheep (apart from when I was pregnant with my youngest and had terrible insomnia).
Well that all changed not too long ago.
You know how sometimes when something happens that you’ve always had an inclination would happen, but you weren’t sure about the “how’s” and the “when’s” and then when it all unfolds in front of you, it’s at the same time both terribly frightening but incredibly exhilarating?
This was exactly like that.
My husband pioneered the way mid-2021 and went on ahead of us to become a farmer in the south of Namibia. The boys and I stayed in Windhoek until the end of 2021 and then we joined Frans on the farm.
I knew zilch about farming. Nothing. At least now I know how to tell if the sheep is a ram or a ewe, but don’t expect me to know at a distance. Or when the sheep runs. Or stands side-ways. I need to see it from the back. And the front. And up close. My poor, patient hubby has his work cut out for him as far as my “education” is concerned.
If there is one thing I do know, it’s that we have grit. It is entwined in our being. I’ve not yet lived a long life, but I have been around long enough to discover determination and cultivate perseverance. I know that the challenges will be many and the days unknown, but I know just as well that there will be an abundance of exquisite moments, ample opportunities to be grateful, and plenty of learning curves to embrace.
I wish to capture these moments and stories here, to take hold of all that is in front of me and not take a single beautiful day for granted.
I am thrilled about what the future holds!
